+8HRS is a photographic diary from a trip to Hong Kong in late 2023. Declan is fascinated by Hong Kong, the layers and juxtaposition of old and new, rich and poor coexisting together in such a small space. ‘Hong Kong is exciting, it’s alive and mysterious,’ he says.
Declan adds: ‘Hong Kong is difficult to photograph as it has been heavily documented by some absolutely brilliant photographers over the years and it’s also very photogenic. The biggest challenges are letting go of what you’ve already seen, at the same time not falling into neon tourist traps!’
The work in +8HRS is a mix of images from larger ongoing personal projects surrounding construction, growth and change. It is also part of a series of zines in which he sees each zine as a standalone chapter.
‘I love zines and zine making, I love how they have no set format or rules, from skateboarding to feminism, they are for and by everyone.’
