Life on the Line is a body of work inspired by a map showing the area of land near Brian’s home in Southwold, Suffolk, that would be inundated in the event of the sea defences failing. ‘My work explores the land around the periphery of this anticipated flood zone’ he explains. ‘The land here is at high risk. It is used for ephemeral activities typically found in what has come to be known as edgelands. But a very specific kind of edgeland created by an anticipated disaster, made more likely by global heating.’

Brian’s work seeks to do more than simply document this environment, but to to draw out the character of this place and how the use of this land is shaped by the potential for disaster. By making this visible in a very specific place, he seek to encourage others to think about these issues on a global scale.
