Anna Kroeger is an artist and photographer from Germany who has spent the last decade navigating the UK’s inland waterways aboard her narrowboat. She is interested in place and how humans connect to their surroundings, both in urban and rural environments.
Walking, and interacting with nature form important parts of Anna’s work. She enjoys a slow analogue practice and is exploring ways to adopt sustainable processes as storytelling tools.

As I Walk This Tidal Path is based on psychogeographic wanderings around the Thames estuary. Walking from Southeast London to Kent and Essex – through nature and industry – Anna explored her inner topography as well as the unique landscapes in front of her.
The book uses elements of the physical world and Anna’s inner world to create something new, a third space where the two merge. ‘Whilst it is a personal project, I believe it also has universal value,’ she explains. ‘In a time marked by ecological and mental health crises, the search for a deep connection with one’s environment is extremely relevant. Blending the mundane and the surreal, the work is an invitation to immerse oneself in the landscape.’
The book contains black-and-white analogue photographs taken on her walks. Hinting at the experience of finding things on a walk, the viewer of the book encounters a concertina fold-out as well as two small loose sheets of tracing paper with text. The book was also available as a limited artist’s edition with original cyanotypes as covers, hand-stitched with sailing twine (now sold out).
As I Walk This Tidal Path is Anna’s first photobook. ‘Self-publishing was a great way to learn. I think I am now much better positioned to work with publishers in the future, or to crowdfund a larger self-published book project,’ she adds.
