Japan Nights
Tim George

A neon journey

The Japan Nights series is a love letter to Japan. The photographs were made in late 2019 as photographer Tim George explored Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka for the first time. Tim was obsessed with the Japanese metropolis before he visited, on arrival this fixation only deepened.

The work aims to reflect the excitement he felt growing up, dreaming of Tokyo from the other side of the world. According to Tim, looking back at the images now (particularly since the pandemic), his time there feels like a dream, the neon-drenched streets look too perfect. "I think of the images as something ‘hyper-real’, a blend of fiction and reality that is impossible to separate."

The exhibition was accompanied by the launch of a self-published limited-edition book.
