DEVELOP+PRINT
group zine/photobook exhibition
SPECIAL OPEN DAY
08 February 2025
1pm–6pm
A curated exhibition of self-published architectural photobooks and zines
Gareth Gardner Gallery – the UK’s only exhibition space dedicated to photography of architecture and place – presented DEVELOP+PRINT in December 2024, with an additional special open day on 08 February 2025
Photographers and artists selected for the exhibition include:
Anna Kroeger, Daniel Hesketh, Declan Driver, Tommy Lee Grimmer and Vladimir Guculak.
An exploration of Chengdu, the architecture of Benidorm, psychogeographical wanderings along the Thames Estuary and a study of mobile home typologies are among the diverse subjects of 12 photographic projects and their associated self-published photobooks, selected for display at the inaugural DEVELOP+PRINT exhibition.
DEVELOP+PRINT explores emerging trends at the intersection of self-publishing and architectural photography. The exhibition celebrates the energy and commitment of photographers and artists who publish their work via self-publishing or through a small independent publisher.
‘We want to present a carefully-curated exhibition rather than the usual publisher bunfight, giving each publication room to breathe and for visitors to immerse themselves in the projects,’ commented gallerist Gareth Gardner. ‘The artist-led exhibition will provide real insights into the process of developing projects from inception through to publishing a zine, photobook or mounting an exhibition.’
He added: ’We are particularly thrilled that a number of the publications are brand new, with some being launched at the exhibition’.
Publications are accompanied by a selection of fine art photographic prints and project interpretation, development materials and prototypes. ‘While zines will be available for sale during the event, the primary focus will be on highlighting the immense creativity and commitment shown by photographers when creating their own publications,’ explained Gardner.
The show pays homage to the value of small books and zines in communicating the purest form of what a photographer intended with their work, not sanitised for commercial purposes or subjected to outside interference.
The selection of publications was the result of a successful open call launched by the gallery in October 2024. Choice of publications by an expert panel took into account the photographic intent as well as design, layout and execution of the publication.
